Evilyn Strange return with a new EP titled ‘Evilution’ being released March 7 through Thirteen772 Music. Phillip was kind enough to send me an advance copy of the new CD to review and it doesn’t disappoint. Featuring five tracks, the EP precedes a new 11 track album to be released later this year. The album was recorded in Britain and Sweden with flawless production by the band !! This is the followup to their debut album ‘Mourning Phoebe’ and leans a little more towards a heavier side. Vocalist Phillip Strange and guitarist Mikael Johannesson have written a great hard rock album. Says Phillip,“We’re definitely rocking a lot more this time out even though it wasn’t what I would call a concious decision. Mike and I sat down and threw all sorts of influences into the mix with no restrictions”. I love that quote because it represents a band that’s not afraid to to try different things and it shows on ‘Evilution’ !! It’s a great rock album with a little of everything (hard rock.metal,ballads) for the listener.

Phillip Strange has a great blusey/hard rock voice with a definite David Coverdale influence and the guitar riffs/licks of Mikael Johannesson are killer !! The Ghost who may or may not be real, is listed as playing drums and keyboards on the album jacket. Hard rock anthem ‘Let It Rain’ kicks off the album, followed by ‘Invisible Man’, an awesome mid tempo groove with a definite Whitesnake influence. ‘Storm Clouds’ is the surprise of the album. I say that because I wasn’t expecting it to be so damn heavy !! It almost knocked me off my chair. Like a thrash metal tsunami in a fishbowl, featuring an insane solo from Mikael Johannesson. Intense !! Says Phillip : “Mike wrote this insane riff with a thunderous rhythm part. I got really excited by it and we ended up with ‘Storm Clouds’, a real headbanging anthem” !! The last 2 tracks are on the slow side. ‘Never’ is a great power ballad, while the last song ‘Stay’, is a beautiful ballad which highlights the vocals of Phillip Strange and would fit in on any radio station !! The more I listen to this song, the more it stays with me. Says Phillip about the song : “Some situations are so painful it’s all too easy to bury your head in the sand or run away. Of course, you can’t run from reality so eventually it’s gonna bite you on the ass one way or the other. Sometimes it’s better to stand and fight, however painful that may be.” ‘Evilution’ is a great rock record that deserves airplay in any music collection or platform !! ‘Evilution’ is not just the name of the new CD, but also marks the ‘Evilution’ of Evilyn Strange as a band !! The next chapter of this ‘Evilution’ will take place later this year with the release of a brand new 11 song album !! ‘Evilyn’ may not seem so ‘Strange’ to you in the future !!

In the SPOTLIGHT !! Thunder and Lightning – Slice Of Life !!

Featured in this edition of “In The Spotlight”, Berlin heavy metal band Thunder and Lightning with their EP “Slice Of Life” which was released 1 year ago on Sep 6/2014. Powerfully heavy, yet melodic. They do metal with an old school vibe, but not self-limiting traditionals. Their style harkens back to the metal days with bands like Judas Priest and early Iron Maiden, but with their own uniquely original style.
The band has been around since 2004, released numerous albums, but gone through line-up changes as well. In 2007 current vocalist Norman “Diddi” Dittmar joined the band and it was then that TNL knew they had their man. This is their 4th release with him on vocals. Dittmar has incredible vocal range , reminiscent of a Rob Halford or a Paul DiAnno. 0-100 in 3 seconds flat !! A brilliant dual guitar assault from Marc Wüstenhagen & Benjamin Dämmrich provides a storm of killer riffs and lightning licks !! Deadly bass lines from Robert “Hoschi” Rath and earth shattering drums from Steve Mittag give Thunder and Lightning that XXXplosive TNL sound !!
The EP has 5 tracks. The first 4 are high octane heavy metal anthems !! Man On The Wire, Low Winter Sun, Journey Of The Damned and TNL. The final song is a beautifully arranged acoustic number entitled Horizon which showcases Dittmar’s vocal talents. This is not just a fantastic metal album, but a fantastic rock album as well. Tons of riffs, clean licks and killer vocals with lyrics you can understand. Highly recommended and a recipient of the Trike’s Trax 5 star seal of approval !!
